How to Search Ottawa County Court Records
The main online tool is MiCOURT Case Search at micourt.courts.michigan.gov/case-search. The county also publishes a deep link scoped to the 58th District Court. The portal covers the 20th Circuit Court, the 58th District Court, and the Probate Court where exposed. Searches are free. Most full document images are not online; copies are ordered from the court that keeps the record.
Before starting a search, pick the court. Felony, divorce, custody, business court, and large civil files sit with the 20th Circuit Court. Misdemeanor, traffic, small claims, landlord-tenant, and civil cases up to $25,000 sit with the 58th District Court. Estates, guardianships, conservatorships, and mental health cases sit with the Probate Court. Knowing the case type cuts down on dead ends.
- Open the MiCOURT Case Search portal in a browser. Pick the court or use the D58 deep link for District Court matters.

Types of Ottawa County Court Records
The county courts produce a wide set of records. Each record type lives in a different court and a different records office. The list below covers the main categories. Knowing the right category up front cuts the time spent searching.
Some matters cross courts. A felony case begins in the 58th District Court with arraignment and bond, then transfers to the 20th Circuit Court after the preliminary exam. A divorce file may include Friend of the Court reports, which are a family-division program inside the Circuit Court. A guardianship of a minor may overlap with a juvenile case. The list below covers the surface; deeper detail lives on each topic subpage.
- Civil records - District Court for cases up to $25,000 and small claims up to $6,500; Circuit Court for cases over $25,000, injunctions, and equitable relief.
- Criminal records - District Court for misdemeanors and first-stage felony work; Circuit Court for bound-over felonies, sentencing, and probation review. See arrest records.
- Traffic and civil infraction records - 58th District Court. See traffic court records.
- Family records - Circuit Court family division: divorce, custody, parenting time, paternity, support, PPOs, Friend of the Court, and Juvenile Court.
- Probate records - Estates, wills, guardianships, conservatorships, mental health, and drain appeals at the Probate Court.
- Business court records - Commercial disputes in the 20th Circuit Court trial division.
- Appellate and agency review records - Circuit Court hears appeals from lower courts and reviews of agency decisions.

Public Access to Ottawa County Court Records
Michigan court records are governed by court rules first, not by FOIA. The lead rule is MCR 8.119, which makes case records open to the public unless a statute, court rule, or sealing order says otherwise. MCR 1.109 controls protected personal identifying information in court filings. The Michigan FOIA at MCL 15.231 covers county executive records, sheriff administrative files, deeds, and other non-court records, but not court case files.
Anyone can search MiCOURT without an account. Anyone can order a plain or certified copy from the office of record by paying the standard copy and certification fees. Some requests require ID. Restricted material is the exception, not the rule. Court staff cannot give legal advice. The Ottawa County FOIA Tracker page points users to MiCOURT first for court files and to the FOIA system for county executive records.
Note: Most Ottawa County court records are open by default under MCR 8.119, but a sealed or statute-restricted file requires a motion or statutory authorization to view.
Records That Are Sealed or Confidential in Ottawa County
Several Ottawa County file types are closed by law. Juvenile delinquency and child protective records are restricted under MCL 712A.28. Adoption records are confidential under MCL 710.67. Mental health proceedings are governed by MCL 330.1748. Expunged or set-aside convictions are limited under MCL 780.621 and the Clean Slate statute MCL 780.621g. PPO files may have confidential addresses and minor names.
For a sealed file, the request usually starts with a motion in the court that sealed it. The motion names the record, states standing or need, serves the parties, and asks the judge to lift or change the seal. Adoption, juvenile, and mental health records follow their own statutes. The Michigan Attorney General's expungement assistance page covers Clean Slate and application-based set-aside relief.

eFiling and MiFILE
After a case is opened, most filings for most case types go through MiFILE, Michigan's statewide eFiling system at mifile.courts.michigan.gov. The Ottawa County Clerk's Circuit Court Records page says post-initiation filings are e-filed for most case types and points users to MiFILE. Probate Court also uses eFiling. Self-represented users can get help at the Ottawa County Legal Self-Help Center at (616) 846-8141, with free kiosks for eFiling, form printing, Zoom hearings, and fee payment.
