Civil and Small Claims Jurisdiction

The 58th District Court handles civil cases up to $25,000. Small claims cases are capped at $6,500. Parties in small claims usually appear without lawyers and without a jury. Civil cases above the small-claims limit and below $25,000 proceed under standard civil rules. The District Court also handles landlord-tenant disputes, with summary proceedings, summons, hearing, judgment, and writ of restitution where eviction is granted. The Holland, Hudsonville, and Grand Haven locations each have their own civil division email.

Criminal Misdemeanors and Felony First Stage

All Ottawa County criminal cases begin in the 58th District Court. Misdemeanors stay in the District Court through plea, trial, sentencing, and probation review. Felony cases begin with arraignment and bond at the District Court, move to a preliminary examination, and transfer to the 20th Circuit Court if the District Court binds the case over (or if the defendant waives the preliminary exam). A district judge or magistrate sets bond. Minor offenses may have standard bonds that allow quick posting; more serious offenses require judicial bond setting.

Traffic Tickets and Civil Infractions

The 58th District Court handles traffic tickets and civil infractions. A civil infraction is a violation of the Michigan Vehicle Code or a local ordinance that substantially corresponds to it. The Civil Infractions portal at app.miottawa.org/CivilInfractions handles online payment and ticket lookup. Tickets may take 3-5 business days to appear for online payment. Drivers can contest a civil infraction at an informal hearing before a magistrate or a formal hearing before a district judge. Drunk driving, driving while suspended, reckless driving, and leaving the scene are criminal traffic offenses, not civil infractions, and follow the criminal-court path. For deeper detail, see Ottawa County traffic court records.
